Meredith Vieira, Today Today, Tomorrow Not

TVSet

The month of May saw three prominent television personalities leave the air. Oprah Winfrey, Katie Couric and Mary Hart all said adios to us. By all reports, Oprah will now spend most of her energies on her cable television channel, OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network, which started up the beginning of this year.

Katie Couric has just signed with ABC to do a talk show. With Oprah’s absence from broadcast television, that might be a good bet. Mary Hart? I don’t know what is in store for the former Entertainment Tonight anchor, who spent almost three decades on that program.

Now, in the month of June, another well watched, female personality has joined the ranks of Oprah, Katie and Mary. Add Meredith Vieira who was on NBC’s Today Show today, but won’t be on tomorrow.

Ms. Vieira co-anchored the Today Show with Matt Lauer for almost five years. She will, surprisingly, turn 58 at the end of this year. I say surprisingly because she looks so young. In fact, age-wise, Oprah, 57; Katie, 54; Mary, 60; and Meredith, 57 all provide a case study in women not only making it to the top of the career mountain but doing it looking remarkable attractive and youthful. Certainly, that’s an inspiration to women and men alike.

Meredith Vieira garnered a solid reputation on top rated television programs, among them, The View, which she was on for nine years and 60 Minutes, where she had a two year tenure, ending some 20 years ago.

Ann Curry will be replacing Meredith Viera in the anchor spot on Today. Reports state, Ms. Vieira is looking to have more family time. However, she will continue as host of ABC’s Who Wants to be a Millionaire, a job she’s held since 2002. There have been rumors that she might return to The View. For now, that’s all they are, rumors.

Meredith will be missed by millions of Today Show viewers. We wish her well.
