At November’s Vegas Strong fundraiser for Nascar driver Kurt Busch, we had a chance to speak with one of the show’s cast members Cheryl Daro. See our photo above.

The actress and self-proclaimed theater geek told us about what being part of the Baz cast has meant to her. She tells us one of the reasons people should come and see Baz is the amazing songs and singing that go on throughout the entire performance.

A graduate of the Atlantic Theater School in New York City, Cheryl is part of a stage performance group. Stage shows have room for growth on the Las Vegas Strip. Perhaps, we will see more shows like Baz pop up on the boulevard.

That’s about to change. The multitalented Charlotte Moroz joined us to speak about her puppet artistry. A resident of Brooklyn, New York, she shares with us interesting information about puppeteering, within the realm of the performing arts.

Living in Brooklyn has, in part, given her the opportunity to create many unique performances with puppets. Her story of being a puppeteer, a theater maker, playwright and all around entertainer may give you a whole new perspective on puppets in general.

As someone who enjoys small and offbeat performance settings, Charlotte’s opportunity to grow as a performer has taken some interesting turns. She is a member of the Society for Misfit Puppets, for example.

During our conversation, Ms. Moroz gives us insight into the multilayered world of puppets. Her overall goal is to have a TV show one day. She says she has been working on developing a concept for one.

He has directed episodes of popular TV shows including Beverly Hills 90210 and Melrose Place. Mr. Williams has also been an entrepreneur.

Anson is currently promoting something he created, with input from his now deceased, famous cousin, Dr. Henry Heimlich. Dr. Heimlich, of course, is most well-known for creating the Heimlich maneuver, the technique which can help save people who are choking.

Anson’s new product is meant to address drowsy driving. Driving while feeling drowsy can lead to falling asleep at the wheel of a car, something that, frighteningly, he says he has experienced. Additionally, Mr. Williams, after having been diagnosed with colon cancer late last year, is happy to be cancer free he says. Having beaten cancer, he had the opportunity to appear on ABC’s Battle of the Network Stars, in which mixed martial arts star and former UFC Champ Ronda Rousey was his coach.

Featured columnist Jay Bildstein joins us for this interesting discussion with the actor, director and entrepreneur.

Discussing Alert Drops, Anson Williams shared this:

“We spent two years developing Alert Drops. No caffeine. No stimulants. No nothing. It’s lemon in a spray with the right amount of citric acid, the right amount of water, the right amount of sour lemon and we’ve already saved lives. Just in the subject groups alone, we’ve saved so many lives. It’s an amazing product and in this day and age of like craziness in this country where everything seems out of control, we can do something positive.”

SPECIAL NOTE: CYInterview would like to emphasize that a person who is sleepy should never get behind the wheel of a car. Additionally, CYInterview has no experience with the above mentioned product and does not take a position as to its value and effectiveness.

Discussing his time on Happy Days with Ron Howard, Henry Winkler and Don Most among other stars, Mr. Williams says it was more than an acting job. He says Gary Marshall gave him the opportunity to learn the art of directing. Anson would go on to direct episodes of numerous TV shows:

“Gary Marshall was very instrumental in terms of broadening our minds and opened up the door to see other opportunities. So Happy Days became much more than just acting on a show. He saw the entrepreneurial spirit in me and really inspired me to go in the business and create products and things like that. … He opened up the Paramount lot and I was able to observe and stand right by the best directors in the world. … When they were shooting all the musical numbers for Grease, you know, on the lot, I was there watching how they did it. So that was my education as a director. And that’s Gary Marshall.”

Discussing his appearance on ABC’s Battle of the Network Stars, he says his coach for the show was none other than UFC star Ronda Rousey. [You can see our recent CYInterview with the director/producer of the upcoming Ronda Rousey documentary Gary Stretch here] Anson had this to say about the MMA fighter:

“It’s so funny. Ronda Rousey was our coach. And she is such a doll. She was such a delight to spend the day with. What a wonderful person, really good hearted, talented, great, great person.”

Finally, Anson Williams recently had a battle with colon cancer. Now, cancer free, he tells us what he wants everyone to know about colon cancer:

“I can’t stress enough how important it is for everyone out there to get colonoscopies, so important, so important, because it’s the, colon cancer has grown 60 percent since 1990. And a lot of it has to do with the foods we’re eating, there’s so much processed stuff. And I don’t want to tell people not to eat meat or whatever, but there’s things you should definitely stay away from.”

If Mr. Stretch’s saga ended there, his life would be remarkable. But he was just getting started. Gary went on to have a career in modeling and acting. His acting work includes roles in the 2004 film Alexander and the 2006 movie World Trade Center.]]> Gary Stretch is a man of many talents. An accomplished boxer, he is a former WBC International Light Middleweight Champion. Arguably, his most prominent fight occurred in 1991 when he fought Chris Eubank in the billed Beauty v The Best contest for the WBO World Middleweight Championship.

If Mr. Stretch’s saga ended there, his life would be remarkable. But he was just getting started. Gary went on to have a career in modeling and acting. His acting work includes roles in the 2004 film Alexander and the 2006 movie World Trade Center.

Now, people will come to know Gary Stretch as a talented filmmaker. Seven years ago, this Renaissance man, hailing from Britain, befriended Ronda Rousey. From 2010 to 2017, he filmed Ronda as she progressed from little known judoka to MMA superstar. He witnessed her sacrifices and climb to glory.

Mr. Stretch crafted the footage of Ronda into a touching love letter of a film titled Through My Father’s Eyes. This is a documentary film that should appeal to MMA fans and non-MMA fans alike. Gary has captured compelling moments in the life of one of MMA’s biggest stars, for all the world to see.

The now producer/director/writer has also been working on another documentary film, Faith, about a variety of boxers and their heartfelt trials and travails. Additionally, on the feature film front, Gary is slated to direct the story of boxer Carlos Palomino.

Gary Stretch’s story is a testament to the grit, determination and creativity of a human being who puts himself out there in life and goes for it.

Reflecting on his boxing career, Gary tells us this:

“With most careers, you just need somebody to believe in you. I had someone as a young boy and that propelled me to keep going and it gets to a point when you start believing in yourself and then your career really starts to flourish and so my background in boxing was simply that. I got pushed into it, but then in the process of it learned trust, respect, discipline and it put my life on a different course and that’s really how I got into the game.”

Well beyond the squared circle, acting and filmmaking have become areas Gary Stretch excels in. Focusing on the filmmaking, his seven years of footage from 2010 to 2017 of Ronda Rousey’s life, going from relative unknown to worldwide mega celebrity, will certainly bring his creativity to a whole new audience. Speaking about Through My Father’s Eyes, the filmmaker tells us about this emotionally resonant project and how he saw something special in Ronda, before the world saw her in a UFC cage.

“People say to me, ’How did you know?’ And to be honest, I didn’t know what was gonna happen. But I thought there was a movie there anyway because if she lost or won or became or didn’t, the commitment this young girl had in my eyes is a movie.”

Ronda Rousey Documentary, Through My Father's Eyes The Ronda Rousey Story, Ronda Rousey Film, Ronda Rousey Documentary, Ronda Rousey Documentary Film
Gary’s documentary film on the UFC star is titled Through My Father’s Eyes: The Ronda Rousey Story

He tells us that early on in her MMA training, Ronda lived in her car, as she was working towards her dream. Ms. Rousey’s sacrifices are captured in footage spanning seven years. Gary says she has seen the film and this was her reaction:

“She wept. She loved the movie. She only saw a very rough version.”

Gary Stretch’s filmmaking career is something to keep an eye on. Aside from his accomplishments in boxing and entertainment, he is a purveyor of some potent messages about life and who we are as people. For example, he shared this with us:

“We’re very powerful. We just don’t realize it. And people are all looking outwards at the news and the TV and the rubbish that they watch. When you turn inwards, we can do a lot of things we don’t have a clue about. We can do anything if we really want to do it. You just gotta be brave enough to want it and take the step and trust the next one will come.”

Alison comes from a family with show business ties. Her father worked for Liberace in Los Angeles. On what it was like to live in a home in Los Angeles, down the street from Liberace, she says this:

“He [my dad] was sort of the L.A. person assigned to Liberace. And we actually rented a house in the Hollywood Hills around the corner from Liberace so my father could be on call. And this, of course, meant I got to go see Liberace’s shows when I was a child because you always want to take the eight year old to Liberace. And actually I met him, he’s wonderful, but my parents really did tell me when we went to the show, ‘Don’t say anything because no one must know that Liberace is gay.’ I said, ‘I’m sorry. I’m eight. I know he’s gay.’”

Known for her role as Nellie Oleson on the iconic TV show Little House on the Prairie, she says this about the show today:

“They tapped into the psyche of millions of women of a certain age. And it’s carried on like that and it has become part of a fabric of our culture and part of that and part of our language and things we talk about where we reference Little House [on the Prairie]. But bizarrely, it is now part of the French culture. People in France now have expressions and things they say that are because of Little House on the Prairie.”

Over the last two years, 1970s star Mason Reese has been talking with us about his now YouTube series Life Interrupted, featuring Alison Arngrim. With her now being considered for an Emmy Nomination in the Best Actress in the Short Form Comedy category, she tells us about how the project came to be:

“I had met Mason several years ago in New York. I was doing my show at The Cutting Room. And I ran into Mason, he was coming to another event and I was like, ‘Oh my God, you’re Mason Reese.’ And we talked and we exchanged numbers and hung out and then he came to L.A.. He was talking about doing a talk show and it was very fun. I remember saying to someone, ‘I have Mason Reese on speed dial on my phone, strangest thing.’ And then like about two years ago my friend Steve Wishnoff, the writer and actor, Mason and he had become friends.

And Mason said, ‘I think I want to do something. I haven’t done show business stuff in ages. I think I want to do something but I don’t know what it would be. I tried to think, what would it look like? Like a sitcom? Who would I play?’ And so Wishnoff starts saying, ‘What if it was sort of like you but not you? What if it was the messed up version of you?’ And they began kicking around ideas.”

Speaking about how to succeed in show business, the veteran actress gives us a great analysis, sharing that it is all about overcoming rejection:

“I have been in the Screen Actor’s Guild since I was five years old. I have been auditioning and working since I was a child. I was told rejection is normal. You’re gonna read for 100 parts before you get one. There’s things that aren’t gonna work out. With my dad and his clients, I saw people who, where the careers were going nowhere and then suddenly they had a big thing or they were a star and it wasn’t going anywhere. And you never knew. There was an element of chance. You did everything you could, but a lot of it sometimes you were in the right place at the right time. And there were elements you could not control and you could not take every single thing personally, you just couldn’t.”

She has performed her one woman show, Confessions of a Prairie Bitch, all across the United States. Ms. Arngrim says she would be open to the idea of doing a long run of her show at a Las Vegas venue:

“That, of course, would be fun because you get to do it every night and then you can just try out new things all the time. That would be very attractive.”

In her book Tippi: A Memoir, Ms. Hedren writes about the people in her life from a woman named Ella Jane Knott who told her she should model, to a story of famous director Alfred Hitchcock, who wanted to sign her to his studio after seeing her in a commercial. The actress agrees that it was being in the right place at the right time and seizing opportunity that has led to her having an amazing life:

“It sort of seems that way doesn’t it? Yeah. I think, I don’t know, maybe I was just one of those people who was in the right place at the right time and or that I was smart enough to take advantage of opportunities. Maybe it was a little of both, a little bit of everything.”

Ms. Hedren is also the mother of actress Melanie Griffith. Speaking about her daughter’s life, she said this:

“Well, I feel that she has just has had an amazing career and I think she is an extraordinary actress and I supported her with everything that she wanted to do. I didn’t push her into anything. I didn’t promote her in any, you know, any way. These were all things that happened to her as my career happened to me.”

Tippi has many things to say about Alfred Hitchcock in her new book Tippi: A Memoir. Regarding how the famous director saw himself, she says this:

“I think in his mind he looked like Cary Grant, you know. Oh yes, I think he did. Yes. It was rather sad actually.”

Tippi Hedren’s new book is titled Tippi: A Memoir

Today, Tippi lives at Shambala in California. It is a place that houses 30 wild animals including lions and tigers. Folks can find more information about it at www.shambala.org. Reflecting on her life among the animals at Shambala, Ms. Hedren says this:

“I hear them roaring during the night and it’s beautiful. It’s just beautiful. I am the luckiest lady in the world.”

Speaking about her life and why people should read her book Tippi: A Memoir, the Hollywood legend says this:

“I think I have had one of the most fascinating lives of anybody I know. I really do. When I think back about all of the things that I have done and the doors that have opened for me that I have walked through. I almost called my book the open door because there’ve been so many incredible things that I have done and the doors that opened for me and a lot of doors I just slammed shut too. But I’ve just had an amazing life.”

The film is not glamorous in any way. A couple of days ago, it was released for purchase on DVD and patrons can also rent the movie at their local Redbox kiosk. Many Americans will be watching this film for the very first time this week and, certainly, in the coming weeks. ]]> Growing up as a child in America is often considered a wonderful thing. With the challenges many other countries face around the world, many babies are born into poverty. For them, there is no clean water, nutritious food, electricity and reasonable shelter. Based on this, we might believe that being born in the United States is like winning a lottery of sorts.

However, not every child in America has a positive experience growing up. According to various reports, there are millions of children growing up in poverty in this country. They do not have enough to eat every day and they live in ramshackle housing. To many of us, these children are invisible.

This past Sunday evening, Moonlight won Best Picture at the Academy Awards. The film is not glamorous in any way. A couple of days ago, it was released for purchase on DVD and patrons can also rent the movie at their local Redbox kiosk. Many Americans will be watching this film for the very first time this week and, certainly, in the coming weeks.

After watching Moonlight, you will be confronted with a world where struggle, hurt and pain is a routine part of the fabric of life in America. This is a world where children lack any kind of stability. This is a world where children grow up in a one parent household, at best. For some of these kids, their other parent has either passed away or is simply no longer in their life and they will never see them.

For the main character in Moonlight, Chiron, whose trajectory in the film is followed from childhood to adulthood, his father is not in the picture and his mother, Paula, is not a stable parent. Paula is played by actress Naomie Harris. She received a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nomination for her role. Paula is a mom and a drug addict who brings home questionable men. She is certainly not a parental role model in Chiron’s life.

After Chiron meets Juan, a drug dealer, played by Mahershala Ali – who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for this role – in a random encounter, Juan becomes the most stable figure in his life. Mr. Ali might be best known for playing the character of Remy Danton in the Netflix series House of Cards.

Obviously, a drug dealer does not make for an appropriate role model for any child, yet in the case of Chiron, Juan is the person who cares about him the most. This strongly impacts Chiron’s understanding of the difference between right and wrong.

Chiron then meets Juan’s girlfriend, Teresa, who becomes a mother figure to him. Teresa gives him a place to stay when his mom does not want him at home or when things at home become too crazy. Teresa becomes the person who gives Chiron what might be seen as the closest thing to unconditional love that he experiences. She is played by singer/actress Janelle Monae.

Moonlight presents a world that many in America unfortunately live in, where money is limited, crime is just around the corner, addiction resides at home, parents are dysfunctional and positive encouragement and role models are not usually in sight. Breaking the cycle of being in jail and running with the wrong crowd is a challenge.

In the film, Chiron grows up and unfortunately becomes a drug dealer himself. With a different upbringing, that would have been less likely to happen. Simply put, Chiron never got the family unit he deserves – the family unit that any child deserves.

In the case of Teresa, what we learn from the film is that sometimes complete strangers act more like family than those we are biologically related to. Though they may not necessarily be able to steer at risk youth in the right direction, it reminds us there are caring people in the world, who give of their time and money to those who do not have any family they can count on.

Though Chiron’s mother goes to a drug rehab facility and apologizes for the hurt she put her son through and they make as much amends as possible, she asks her son during that scene how Teresa is doing. Sometimes the mother figure in a child’s life is not the mother at all. That is the case for Chiron where another woman did some of the things his mother should have been doing all along. Some people have to go outside their home to find the loving family environment they always wanted.
